About me

My name is Adriana Velasco, I was born in Punto-Fijo, Venezuela and naturalized American citizen. I have a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology with a certificate in archaeology and German from the University of Wisconsin.  I’m working on my Ph.D. dissertation on Seasonality Research in Archaeology. My main question is how early humans in the Middle Stone Age (~300K – ~40Kya) in South Africa used their knowledge on seasonality to exploit resources available to them; to answer this question, I look at the ecological settings and the dynamic between humans, animals and their environment. Understanding today’s ecological settings helps us built predictive models that help us reconstructing human behavior in the past, as well as understanding the scope of land use and management during the Middle Stone Age. Additionally, I investigate the recording structures found in teeth of mammals to ascertain seasonality markers with micro-computed tomography, and regular light microscopy.
